The Diodes segment starts at 9:00 minutes and the film is discussed at 29:00 minutes. There are a lot of details of what Paul and John did after the Diodes broke up in 1981, including working with comedian Ricky Gervais and Killing Joke's Youth (around 25:00 minutes).

IndieCan Radio Interview

Circa 1977: The Diodes wrapped up in Toronto with a second screening at the Oz Gallery. It was good to see some of the younger generation being drawn to the film by some of the media attention the film has been getting.

NxNE was a great success. The film festival director, Ambrose Roche, said "the mix of circa 1977 and The Blank Generation was a highlight of the fest."

IndieCan.com also posted the interview that Joe Chisholm did with Paul Robinson, Aldo Erdic and Ian Mackay on June 16. Below are the links to the audio stream (episode 185):

Toronto Film Scene Review

Here's a review of the film by Jovana Jankovic from Toronto Film Scene:

http://thetfs.ca/2010/06/23/review-the-diodes/

"All sorts of metaphysical issues abound here: nostalgia, ‘reality’, duration, the passage of time, aging, mortality, and along with these, the notion of cultural eras, trends, fashions, revolutions in thought and art. Yes, I’m being quite lofty here, but to be honest, these are exactly the kinds of thoughts that went through my head as I watched Aldo Erdic’s short film Circa 1977: The Diodes (2009) at the North by Northeast (NXNE) festival last week."

Premiere Screening A Smashing Success!

After a stress-filled week leading up to it, the premiere screening of circa 1977: The Diodes was a resounding success! Despite the 3:00 pm screening time, the theatre was filled to capacity and, in fact, there was an overflow crowd that watched the film in an adjacent room.

It probably helped that Ivan Kral's film The Blank Generation was being shown at the same time slot. After the screening Aldo Erdic and the Diodes got to hang out with Ivan, who was extremely warm, affable and had a great sense of humour.

From Ralph Alfonso:

The Diodes Interviews

The Diode's were recently interviewed in advance of their live shows this weekend:

Waterloo show

From Ralph Alfonso:

"Wow. great gig last night. lots of nice people and old friends stopping by the merch table to reminisce. Some guy reminded me that I wouldn't let him in the Crash'n'Burn back in the day as he was too young! wow...

The band did not disappoint. Loud. Tight. Crystal clear sound and vocals. All the hits and more, including a rousing Catwalker encore. Thanks to technology, the band is probably even louder now than they were then :)

Special mention as always to the bereted Bo Cairo, master of audio.

And thus, now, all roads (well, the 401) lead to Call The Office in London, Ontario. The first time the original 1977 Diodes play there since a legendary appearance in...uh... 1977... when they rocked the mythic Applegarth Follies art gallery. Hopefully, the equally mythic Mike Niederman will be there tonight.. he co-ordinated that original appearance and later nurtured the nascent London punk scene via his encouragement of The Demics."

circa 1977: The Diodes synopsis

About the film:

Formed in October 1976, the Diodes were one of Canada's first punk bands who, in the span of one year, opened Toronto's first punk club, became the first Canadian punk band to sign with a major label and had their debut album released before the Sex Pistols and other first wave UK punk bands. The Crash'n'Burn club they opened helped inspire new bands to form and catalyzed an explosive local punk scene that proved to be of the same caliber as the early New York and U.K. scenes. However, by 1981, the band was worn down by an indifferent Canadian music industry, a worsening economy and a lack of touring venues.

Directed by Aldo Erdic.
A Bongo Beat Films/ToBeScene Production
Running Time: 28 minutes.

About the director:

Aldo Erdic started out in 1997 as an underground DIY videographer who created a punk videozine series called F*U*TV, putting out seven issues over a period of two years. Since then he has continued to document the local Toronto punk scene. Aldo is also one of the co-directors of The Last Pogo Jumps Again, a comprehensive feature length documentary on the 1970’s Toronto and area punk scene produced and directed by Colin Brunton (Roadkill, Highway 69, Hedwig And The Angry Inch), which is currently in post-production with a late 2010 scheduled release.
